From exhaustion to exhilaration, how were those first hours and days with your new baby?

When my husband and I found out we were expecting twins a couple of years ago, we were not prepared for the news of multiples. We experienced various emotions including disbelief and fear or what I like to refer to as “twin shock.” After the initial “twin shock” we started on our journey of twin readiness, anxiously awaiting our bundles of joy, in between the mandatory prescribed bed rest at 16 weeks gestation, numerous ultrasounds and the frequent multiple high risk prenatal visits.

At 37 weeks gestation our beautiful twins Matthew and Abigail were delivered by cesarean section at Baptist Hospital. During the delivery my husband and I felt that we were witnessing a true miracle, first came Abigail and then Matthew two minutes later. They were truly a blessing from God. We fell in love with our new babies instantly.

The healthcare team at Baptist Hospital was exceptional. They kept us informed at all times, especially when I had to be transferred to the OB step-down unit after being placed on special medications for elevated blood pressures after the delivery.

When we took our twins home we put all the research findings into practice. The twins were kept on the same eating and sleeping schedule. It worked like a gem and allowed for scheduled rest time for my husband and myself who were practically zombies resulting from sleep deprivation. My husband and I also decided to work out a sleep schedule for ourselves where one of us would take a night shift, on alternate nights getting up every 3 hours to feed and diaper change our babies, and the other be allowed to sleep a full 6 hour night. That plan worked so well, we kept it until the twins started sleeping throughout the night. If we had to do it all over again we would not have done anything differently. Matthew and Abigail are truly our blessings from above.
